When we’re in London for more than a few days, sometimes we’ve planned a day trip–or a few days’ trip–to other parts of England. We’ve used two means of doing this. Either we have taken a train to the location or we’ve used a tour operator. I don’t have any interest in driving in England on the left side of the road. I don’t want to concentrate that hard. Also, you can get so many places without driving.
When we’ve traveled using an official tour operator, we’ve used Viator. We used them to take a tour to Windsor Castle, Stonehenge, and Bath and also to the Cotswolds. They offer a large number of tours starting from various locations in London and both times we used them, the tour was excellent and well-priced.
When we’ve travelled by train we’ve also universally had a great experience. We spend a bit of time understanding the best way to get to a place (lately, usually starting with AI and then confirming that the info is accurate) and using the train line’s website to understand beneficial ticket options. If we’re planning to stay in a hotel at the destination, we’ll usually try to be within a half mile of the train station. We are died-in-the-wool schleppers of luggage, rain or shine. You’d probably have many more options if you’re willing to take a cab, but that’s not us (so far).
